INTRODUCING DEJA'S GLOBAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE
PANTHERS AROUND THE WORLD (PAW) PROGRAM
Office of Study Abroad
I have been involved in the Panthers Around the World (PAW) for a little over an academic year and it has been a very rewarding experience!
MORIKAMI MUSEUM &Â JAPANESE GARDENS INTERNSHIP
This experience has been a great one as I learned so much on Japanese culture and customs that have been supplemented by the courses I have taken at FIU. Spending the summer here has, not only, molded existing skills but fostered new ones as well. I helped out in the office with projects and student visits and really admired and learned a lot from the way the Morikami tied together Japanese Culture and the themes of history and art to teach to the people that visit the museum. Some times I would be allowed to walk around the gardens and was able to see how it was beautifully put together. It encompassed many elements of Japanese culture just as George Morikami would have wanted. I learned, during my internship, that George Morikami was apart of the Yamato Colony (one of the original Japanese colonies in the United States) and as the colony's presence in South Florida started to decline, George Morikami stayed and amassed many acres of land to which he donated to the county to be turned into a museum to commemorate the Yamato Colony and to educate the public about their presence. This experience of working with the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens has caused me to love this place more than I did before!
GLOBAL LEARNING COURSES
The global learning courses offered at FIU has provided me with an amazing outlook on global affairs around the world and has motivated me, career wise, to pursue jobs and research in this field. A notable class would have to be Race and Ethnicity where we learned these concepts and what they mean throughout the world and how it affects the people. I have also taken Black Popular Cultures course and learned a bunch of information on modern day topics dealing with African American culture especially within America. This course also provided me with some personal insight on topics I should be aware of. I have taken a variety of Korean courses as well that include both the language and culture/history class. The language courses proved to be quite difficult as I was able to take up to Korean 3 but well worth it as it gives me the tools to properly navigate Korea when I go. The culture/history courses also does this as it provides me the knowledge of how to act appropriately in Korea and what is deemed as respectful versus what is considered as not.
I was the PR Representative for the Korean Culture Club at FIU and have had so much fun being apart of Korean culture alongside my peers who also have a passion for this. My biggest accomplishment was that we brought about a Korean Culture Festival that is now going on its second year!

Reflection Page
Being apart of the global learning medallion was the best decision I have ever made in my college career. It has given me such a wide window of multiple opportunities that I do not think I would've been apart of if it wasn't for this program. My global perspective has immensely broadened through this experience and so has my global awareness as there are so many things going on in this world that is, indeed, interconnected. I plan to be engaged, globally, in my career as I want to research social justice issues and causes throughout the world. In FIU's words, I want to "Be World's Ahead"!
